Annelida / Polychaeta: Aphrodite (Sea mouse) preserved each
[9610550]
$16.80

Phylum Annelida / Class Polychaeta (bristleworms) / Order Errantia / Family Polynoidae / Genus Aphrodite Synonyms: Sea mouse; Aphrodita. Preserved specimen. Sold in individually. If you require six or more of this specimen, a price reduction of 30% will be applied once we have processed the order internally.

Polychaete worms (or bristleworms) are so named due to the chaetae (bristles or setae) along the dorsal side. The body of this worm is elliptical in shape, generally flattened, with overlapping scales or plates (elytra), and covered along the back side with a thick mat of grey-brown hair-like bristles. Along the sides, the bristles become finer and take on a iridescent blue-green.

This species appears to use anal respiration. It will be found buried head first in muddy sand and is rarely seen on the seabed. Often the Sea Mouse may be uncovered on the beach at the lowest tides. Depth range is from tidal areas to at least 90m. Widely distributed through out oceans.

Generally, our specimens are mailed to the customer in plastic bags with a small amount of holding solution. I would recommend that you accumulate some glass jars for displaying the annelids. Jam and jelly jars will do. Buy enough rubbing alcohol (isopropyl alcohol 70%) to cover the specimen in the jars. I often use jars with snap lids that I buy cheaply at yard sales. I have discovered recently that IKEA carries jars like that, but with silicone ring gaskets to seal the jar and lid. The other kind have a rubber gasket made by Ball and commonly available from stores carrying canning supplies. You might consider putting two or more different annelids in each jar to make comparison easier.
