Prepared microscope slide Mouse Embryo - Set of 19

These embryology study slides are all fixed in Bouinís fluid They are then stained with either Harrisí Hematoxylin or Heidenhainís Hematoxylin. Then they are counter-stained. Samples are 15μ thick. All views of these slides are at 40x. The main slide shown is one of three stained with Harrisí Hematoxylin and counter-stained with Eosin. There are 18 additional slides in the set. The first two additional slides are also stained with Harrisí Hematoxylin and counter-stained with Eosin. The third, fourth and fifth additional slides are all stained with Harrisí Hematoxylin and counter-stained with Methyl green. The sixth and seventh additional slides are both stained with Harrisí Hematoxylin and counter-stained with Orange G. The eighth and ninth additional slides are stained with Heidenhainís Hematoxylin and counter-stained with Eosin. The tenth through fourteenth additional slides are all stained with Heidenhainís Hematoxylin and counter-stained with Methyl green. The fifteenthth through eighteenth additional slides are all stained with Heidenhainís Hematoxylin and counter-stained with Orange G. They all may be seen by clicking on the following lines.

These slides were prepared sometime prior to the 1950s by an individual named Kirschbaum.

Bouinís fluid contains picric acid, which has the property that it renders tissue more readily stained by acid dyes. Harrisí Hematoxylin is a nuclear stain that produces a deep purple blue. Heidenhainís Hematoxylin uses two solutions, the first being an iron mordant such as ferric chloride or ferrous ammonium sulfate followed by an application of hematoxylin.
