The image is of Blechnum occidentale spore at 40x. The slide was prepared with the unusual property that the underside of the specimen is blacked out. Observation can only be made using incidental light.
This slide was prepared by C. Baker, an optician in Londom W.C.. It has been used in an unknown classroom setting. From the quality of the work, and the general appearance, it is estimated to have been prepared prior to 1900.
