Frosting provides an area on the edge of the slide where notes may be made, often with a graphite pencil. In past, a weak solution of hydrofluoric acid was used to etch the glass. More recently, the less hazardous method of sandblasting has been used. Ceramic coating was an excellent method, but may have proven too costly.
Ceramic coatings on glass first appeared in this country in the form of labels on beer bottles; notably those of the Coors family. The story of the development of ceramics in the bottle industry is complicated. It was a German-born émigré named John Herold who first manufacture china and heat-resistant porcelain ovenware from clay deposits near Golden, Colorado.
