Western yellowjacket preserved specimen. This is the most commonly encountered species of Vespula and is sometimes called the "meat bee." The only species which has a complete yellow eye ring around both eyes.

Nests are mostly subterranean frequently in old rodent tunnels. Yellow jackets are pollinators. They feed on soft-bodied insects such as caterpillars and flies.
