The Michelson Interferometer is a high quality optical instrument capable of measuring distances on the order of half a wavelength of light, the index of refraction of air, and illustrating the functional difference between division of amplitude and division of wavelength. With a minor modification, it will measure the deflection when one pushes on a concrete wall or steel beam.
Requires a vacuum pump, a vacuum gauge and a monochromatic light source such as a laser pointer.
