Spectroscope - hand-held -adjustable slit.
These are used in the laboratory and classroom when wavelength measurement is not neccesary.
Spectra of the first and second order may easily be seen. The dispersion is by means of a diffraction grating of approximately 600 lines per mm.
These instruments are useful for viewing the bright lines of metal salts in flames, of gases in discharge tubes and absorption spectra of solutions and certain colored glasses. Both fixed and adjustable slit units have a single collimating lens with fixed focus.
